There is no shortage of options for recovering from inflammation. And while some are more effective than others, it is hard to beat the combination of compression and massage. This month’s blog features Normatec compression boots, a type of compression therapy initially used exclusively by individuals with circulation issues and later adopted by elite athletes. It is now available at McKenzie Sports Physical Therapy. But those who know us understand that we don’t offer gimmick services, so we are diving into the science behind inflammation, compression, and recovery.
Why does inflammation happen?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, inflammation is a normal response to injury and invasion by pathogens, such as germs, causing an increase in lymph fluid to repair and heal the body. It naturally occurs to promote healing. It is a good thing. But too much of a good thing can be a problem, making the body more susceptible to injury and illness.
Inflammation is expected postoperatively. Surgeons prepare patients for managing inflammation with the same prescription your PT likely gave you after an injury—rest, ice, compression, elevation, or RICE. Compression socks are a constant companion for at least a month following joint replacement surgery.
For athletes and other active individuals, inflammation is not uncommon either. Whether you are training for a marathon and increasing mileage, had an intense workout at the gym, or spent a long day at the mountain skiing, your legs pay the price. And the price is inflammation.
Why is inflammation a problem?
More evidence has shown that inflammation can sometimes have trouble exiting the body efficiently. This is called lymphedema. When inflammation lingers, it can contribute to muscle soreness and hinder recovery.
How do Normatec compression boots help reduce inflammation?

Normatec boots utilize dynamic air compression to massage your legs. These boots have sections that inflate sequentially, starting at the feet and moving up towards the thigh. This compressive action helps move more blood to and from the legs. As Dr. Chris McKenzie describes, the boots compress the muscles and soft tissues, effectively “pushing” inflammation through the body more efficiently (much like ankle pumps after surgery). They help push good, oxygenated blood flow in and encourage the removal of metabolic waste products and toxins. This is why people often report their legs feeling significantly better after a session, and science backs this up.
Dr. McKenzie highlights the role of the lymphatic system in this process.
“We all have a bit of edema (swelling) in our lymphatic system when our legs are inflamed from heavy use. The lymphatic system is crucial for getting waste products out of the body, eventually leading to the kidneys for elimination through urination.”
He elaborates that the sequential compression of the Normatec boots mimics lymphatic massage up the leg, towards the groin, compressing from the foot to the thigh. This action helps to push inflammation and lymph fluid towards larger vessels that can more effectively transport the waste out of the body. This isn’t just beneficial for individuals with lymphedema; it’s a natural process that helps everyone, especially after a challenging workout or surgery.
Dr. McKenzie has achieved great results using the boots after total joint replacements, including hips, as the attachments can extend up to the pelvis, to promote blood flow and enhance the body’s ability to circulate blood more efficiently. He’s also seen great results in athletes. One recent patient ran a half marathon and reported that his legs felt like they had cement in them the day after. He came in, and after using the Normatec boots, his legs felt normal again.
Who should use Normatec Compression Boots?
Normatec compression boots can benefit a variety of individuals, including:
- Athletes: Great for post-race recovery or after intense training sessions to address muscle soreness and hasten recovery.
- Post-surgery patients (Total Knee Replacement and other joint replacements): Patients often report their legs feeling better the rest of the day after use. However, obtaining clearance from your surgeon before starting Normatec therapy after surgery is crucial.
- People with circulation issues: Consult your doctor first, but this type of therapy has been used successfully in individuals with circulation issues, such as those with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and lymphedema.
When should you use them?
- For athletes: McKenzie recommends using the boots within 24 hours after an event, with immediate use ideal.
- For surgery patients: You will need clearance from your surgeon. Typically, they advise starting at a low-pressure setting (Normatec compression boots have seven levels) and increasing as tolerated.
How often and for how long should you use Compression Therapy?
Normatec sessions at McKenzie Sports Physical Therapy can last between 15 and 45 minutes. While they recommend coming in once a week or so for regular recovery, there is no limit to how frequently you can use the boots. They offer packages with special pricing for those who wish to use them more often. While there are also attachments for arms, McKenzie Sports PT currently focuses on the benefits for the legs and hips. If you’re looking for a way to enhance your recovery after intense activity or surgery, consider trying Normatec boots at McKenzie Sports Physical Therapy.
